Event Details

Dear Year 6 Parents / Carers,

It is that time of year again – the annual billy cart race is fast approaching. To ensure a fun event for all, we have attempted to simplify things a little this year. Students will need to organise a billy cart prior to decorating day. This requires the teams to meet up in their own time to either build or borrow a billy cart.

The Billycart Decorate It Day –Tuesday 7th December 2021

Race Day is Thursday 9th December at 2.00pm 2021 – whole school event

Students will be working in groups of 6 or 7 and will require that the Billy Cart is completed and made with all wheels and steering attached and be fully functional before they bring it to school. This day is only dedicated for decorations and organising their ‘Race Look’ and have a practice to see if any issues arise.

This year is a day event and parents/carers are welcome to attend from 2:00pm. Some COVID restrictions are still in place for whole school events, visitors to the school will need to check in using the school’s QR code, provide evidence of vaccination, adhere to physical distancing, density limits and wear a face mask if entering a school building.

If parents wish to come along and watch the billy cart race they may do so, however, they must provide COVID19 vaccination information to the school indicating their vaccination status. This can be in the form of the following;

  • a letter from a medical practitioner confirming the person’s vaccination status or confirming a person is medically exempt.
  • A certificate of immunisation, can be emailed to the school at
  • Evidence of vaccine on the Service Victoria App
  • An immunisation history statement obtained from the Australian Immunisation Register.

Parents can bring along a picnic rug and watch on the oval. The school assembly will take place after the Billy Cart race.

Materials that are required to make the billy carts out of school hours include:

  • Wood to make the cart frame. Please ensure these materials are suitable (e.g. no pine logs or balsa wood!)
  • Nuts, bolts etc. to fasten the billycart together
  • Wheels – which are safe and can roll
  • Rope for steering and cushion for the seat
  • Painted base design to decorate
  • No motorised billycarts and no dangerous items.

Materials that are required to decorate the billy carts at school include:

  • Odds and ends to attach to beautify the cart with the right glues or adhesives (for some, this is the most important part!)
  • Helmets for racing (bike helmets will do- these can be decorated as well)
  • A costume theme for all group members

The billycart race day is always terrific fun, but we need parents’ support to ensure everyone can participate. No wheels = no billycart = no race = . This is a team effort and if one group doesn’t have support we can’t race.

If you are able to assist with the supply of any materials or assist building other teams’ billy carts, could you please contact the relevant groups to make a time out of school hours. To ensure consistency and fairness, students have been briefed on the design specifications their billy cart must meet (e.g. no complete bike frames).

We have organised groupings and will allow time at school for students to begin planning. Students will be encouraged to work on their billy cart (including designing and initial building) in their teams at home in the lead up to the day to ensure their billy cart will be ready for racing.

For further enquiries please contact Mr Bortolot or Mr Kyprianou at school.
